            <title>Historic Infrastructure</title>
            <description>Canada Line, which provides rapid transit service between downtown Vancouver, Richmond and Vancouver International Airport (YVR), was officially opened three-and-a-half months ahead of schedule on August 17. The $2-billion project is one of the largest infrastructure  undertakings ever completed in B.C. It will transport passengers along the 19-kilometre route from downtown Vancouver&apos;s Waterfront Station to Vancouver International Airport in just 25 minutes, and is projected to carry 100,000 passengers per day, eliminating 14,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually.</description>

            <title>Province to Fund Insulin Pumps for Children</title>
            <description>Premier Gordon Campbell announced that the province will fund insulin pumps for eligible children with type 1 diabetes. There are approximately 2,200 children with type 1 diabetes in British Columbia, and the Ministry of Health Services estimates that about 600 children use insulin pumps. The expanded coverage will provide new pumps for approximately 200 patients each year.</description>

            <description>Cyclists throughout British Columbia will benefit from new, safe and high-quality cycling trails, bike lanes, bike lockers and more, thanks to Bike BC, a $31-million program for cycling infrastructure, Premier Campbell announced on September 16. Bike BC funding brings the total cycling investment the Province has made since 2001 to $114 million. That investment has helped build more than 220 kilometres of cycling paths in over 50 communities across B.C.</description>

            <title>Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program</title>
            <description>The Province will offset the carbon tax for local governments who have committed to become carbon neutral by 2012. The Climate Action Revenue Incentive program will be a new conditional grant equal to what local governments pay in the carbon tax, with only one string attached - to be eligible, communities must sign onto the Climate Action Charter and commit to becoming carbon-neutral by 2012.</description>

            <title>No More Tolls!</title>
            <description>Tolls on the Coquihalla Highway will be removed immediately, Premier Gordon Campbell announced on September 26 during his annual address to the Union of B.C. Municipalities. The total capital cost of the three phases was $848 million. Current annual revenue collected by the tolls is approximately $57 million. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure anticipates that revenues collected from the tolls since its opening will have effectively offset those total capital costs by next month.</description>

            <title>Raise-a-Reader!</title>
            <description>For the fifth consecutive year, the Province will match all donations raised during CanWest&apos;s Raise-a-Reader campaign in B.C. The provincial government has been matching funds collected since 2004, and has contributed nearly $2.4 million to the campaign to date. National Raise-a-Reader Day is September 24 and the money raised will support many family literacy groups across British Columbia.</description>

            <title>New Hospital, New Access to Health Care</title>
            <description>Premier Campbell celebrated a milestone in the history of health care in British Columbia on September 9 with the official opening of the new Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre.  The hospital opened its doors to patients on Aug. 24 and the cancer centre began treating patients on Aug. 25.   The 300-bed facility is nearly three times the physical size of the MSA Hospital.  It has been designed and constructed to minimize the impact on the natural environment and the facility is expected to consume nearly 40 per cent less energy. The savings in carbon dioxide emissions will be approximately 3,100 tons a year and the cost savings nearly $500,000 a year.</description>

            <description>Premier Campbell opened Canada&apos;s first community court, in downtown Vancouver, bringing together a host of integrated services aimed at helping offenders break free from the cycle of crime, homelessness, addictions and mental illness.  Health, income assistance and housing staff, as well as victim services and a native court worker, are located together in the new community courthouse, along with Crown counsel, defence counsel, a police officer and probation officers. Integrated teams will work together to identify offenders&apos; needs and circumstances and to develop case management plans.</description>

            <title>Neighbourhoods of Learning</title>
            <description>Premier Gordon Campbell announced on September 3 a $30-million Neighbourhoods of Learning pilot project, which will see education and community services brought together in a single neighbourhood hub.  Three school districts will be participating in the pilot project. Vancouver school district will be the first to create three Neighbourhoods of Learning Model Schools by partnering with the Province. Queen Mary Elementary, General Gordon Elementary and Lord Strathcona Elementary will undergo renovations to restore their historical buildings or replacement, and include services on site that will benefit students and the community.</description>

            <title>Welcome Aboriginal Athletes</title>
            <description>One of the largest sporting events in North America got underway on August 3 as Premier Campbell welcomed athletes, coaches and cultural participants to the 2008 North American Indigenous Games. Close to 5,000 athletes as well as officials from across Canada and the U.S. took part in 14 sporting events throughout the Cowichan Valley. Team BC includes at least 425 athletes, coaches and managers. The opening ceremonies saw the arrival of the BC150 Cowichan 2008 Spirit Pole which will remain in the community as a permanent legacy of the Games.</description>

            <title>Enhancing B.C.&apos;s Highway System</title>
            <description>The Province and the Government of Canada will jointly fund up to $231 million worth of National Highway System improvements in B.C., under the Building Canada Plan. A number of specific highway improvements will be announced in the coming weeks. The first project to receive funding involves building a nine-kilometre four-lane highway west of the existing two-lane section of Highway 97 between Winfield and Oyama. The Province will contribute $44.3 million and the federal government will provide up to $33.6 million toward the total $77.9 million cost.</description>

            <title>Screening Newborn Babies</title>
            <description>Newborn babies in British Columbia will now be screened for more than three times as many disorders at birth that can be treated to avoid lifelong health issues, Premier Gordon Campbell announced on July 3.   With a few drops of blood collected on a filter paper card, about 42,000 babies are screened each year.  Approximately 20 children a year are identified with one of six treatable conditions. The additional screening is expected to benefit another 20 children a year.</description>

            <description>The Province is providing $10 million to dredge Burnaby Lake, re-establishing it as an international rowing venue and improving the lake&apos;s fish and wildlife habitat, Premier Campbell announced on June 6.             <title>Historic Day for the Okanagan</title>
            <description>Almost 50 years after Princess Margaret and Premier W.A.C. Bennett cut the ribbon and opened Okanagan Lake Bridge in Kelowna, Premier Gordon Campbell and former premier William (Bill) R. Bennett used the same scissors to cut the ribbon and officially open the new William R. Bennett Bridge.  The $144.5-million bridge opened 108 days ahead of schedule.  In spring 2005, SNC-Lavalin Inc. was chosen to design, build, finance, and operate the bridge under a 30-year contract. During that period, government will save over $25 million in construction, financing, maintenance and rehabilitation costs than if the bridge was built by traditional methods.</description>

            <description>The Province will provide $2 million in one-time funding to the Michael Cuccione Foundation to support research into new treatments for childhood cancer. The research will be carried out at the Child &amp; Family Research Institute affiliated with BC Children&apos;s Hospital. The foundation was established by Michael Cuccione, who after being diagnosed with cancer at age 9, began a personal fight against childhood cancer and challenged others to collectively make a difference. Michael beat cancer but died at age 16 from respiratory failure related to his cancer treatments.</description>

The programs will be funded through the $129 million Community Development Trust announced last January by the federal government.             <description>The Central City Foundation will use a one-time $2 million grant from government to build the Crossing at Keremeos facility, which will become B.C.&apos;s first long-term residential treatment centre for addicted youth.  It will be located on a 58-acre area of land outside of Keremeos. Construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2008 and be completed by summer 2009. The foundation expects to have 20 treatment beds available for early occupancy by December 2008.</description>

            <title>$11 Million for Nanaimo</title>
            <description>Premier Campbell announced $11 million in provincial funding on February 29 to support Nanaimo&apos;s vision of a green Port of Nanaimo Centre and a major expansion of the Nanaimo Airport.  The $5-million investment in the Port of Nanaimo Centre will support upgrades to &quot;green&quot; the facility, ensuring it meets Silver LEEDs standards.  The Province is investing $6 million to help the Nanaimo Airport Expansion Project extend the runway by 480 metres to allow larger planes to land, and provide for new high-intensity runway lighting and improved navigational instruments to allow planes to land in inclement weather.</description>

            <title>Helping the Homeless</title>
            <description>The Province is purchasing another six single room occupancy (SRO) hotels with 330 units in Vancouver to reduce homelessness and help protect affordable housing stock for those most in need.  Premier Gordon Campbell made the announcement on February 14.  The purchase of the six buildings, all current or former SRO hotels in the Downtown Eastside, means the Province has now bought 16 SRO hotels with 925 rooms in Vancouver over the past year. Three of the purchases announced today are vacant buildings meaning these 115 units will be new affordable housing units added to the current supply.</description>

            <title>Lighting a New Era</title>
            <description>Premier Campbell turned on the new, power-efficient lights of the B.C. Legislature on November 19.  He also announced the provincial government and BC Hydro have entered into a major energy-saving initiative with BC Hydro.  The Public Sector Energy Conservation Agreement will significantly decrease electricity consumption across more than 6,500 public sector buildings.  The agreement sets ambitious conservation goals - reducing electricity consumption in existing provincial buildings by five per cent from the 2006 baseline by 2011, 14 per cent by 2016, and 20 per cent by 2020.</description>

            <description>The Premier announced on November 16 the Province is providing $23 million for a new Centre for Learning Building, increasing access to post-secondary education at the Okanagan College Kelowna campus.  The centre will add an additional 22 classrooms with 685 instructional seats, office space for approximately 110 staff and faculty, a larger library, student and food services, and a professional development centre.  The centre will also have a media shop with graphics lab, video editing and media production services as well as 36 technology workstations.</description>

            <title>New Drug Therapy Initiative</title>
            <description>As the lead funding partner in a new $78-million study of the effectiveness of Alzheimer&apos;s medications, the Province will provide PharmaCare coverage of three cholinesterase inhibitors for the first time, Premier Gordon Campbell announced on October 4.  The Alzheimer&apos;s Drug Therapy Initiative will gather clinical evidence on who will benefit from these drugs and what the benefit will be for people in the mild to moderate stages of Alzheimer&apos;s disease.  The initiative is expected to last up to three years and involve more than 25,000 British Columbians.</description>

            <description>Hon. Steven Point was installed as the 28th lieutenant-governor of British Columbia on October 1.  At 23, Mr. Point was elected Chief of the Skowkale First Nation, a post he held for 15 years. He has served as tribal chair of the Stó:lo Nation and Grand Chief of Stó:lo Tribal Council. He has been a provincial court judge since 1999, most recently sitting in Abbotsford, and he was chief commissioner of the B.C. Treaty Commission.</description>

            <description>Premier Campbell officially opened the new Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre at UNBC on September 21. The 13,000-square-metre facility includes a three-basketball-court gymnasium, a field house with room for two indoor soccer fields, a 280-metre indoor track, weight and cardio equipment, as well as sport medicine and physiotherapy services. Of the $30.75-million cost to build the centre, the Province is providing $20.5 million, with additional funds from the City of Prince George and the University of Northern B.C.</description>

            <title>Expanding the Gateway to the North</title>
            <description>The Premier announced on September 21 that the Province will provide up to $11 million to the Prince George Airport for expansion of its main runway so it can service larger airlines flying between Asia and North America. The expansion allows Prince George to move forward on its plan to become a major international gateway for cargo and passenger traffic. The Prince George Airport Authority (PGAA) is planning to increase its main runway to 11,400 feet from the current 7,400 feet, and upgrade its taxiway, apron system and navigational aids.</description>

            <title>More Patient Services in  East Kootenay</title>
            <description>Premier Campbell attended the opening of the newly renovated East Kootenay Regional Hospital on September 17.  The completion of $32 million in renovations means fewer patients will have to travel to receive treatment. The final phase of construction focused on updating the diagnostic imaging department, which now features new sections for radiology, ultrasound, CT, nuclear medicine, and a fixed pad for the mobile MRI.  One year ago, Premier Campbell was in Cranbrook for the grand opening of the hospital&apos;s new front entrance, emergency department and ambulatory care centre.</description>

            <title>Expanded Port Creates New Opportunities</title>
            <description>Premier Campbell helped open the new Fairview Container Terminal at the Port of Prince Rupert on September 12.  The $170-million project has a design capacity of 500,000 containers, and opens up a new high-speed trade corridor between Asia and North America.  A friendship agreement was signed between the Port of Ningbo, China, and the Port of Prince Rupert.  The agreement will see the two ports exchange economic and technical information, and promote shipping opportunities between them.</description>

On July 29, the Huu-ay-aht First Nations voted 90 per cent in favour of endorsing the Maa-nulth Final Agreement, bringing the west coast of Vancouver Island area one step closer to a final treaty. The remaining four Maa-nulth First Nations - the Ucluelet First Nation, the Toquaht Nation, the Ka:&apos;yu:&apos;k&apos;t&apos;h&apos;/Che:k&apos;tles7et&apos;h&apos; First Nations and the Uchucklesaht Tribe - will be holding their community votes in October 2007.</description>

            <title>New Bridge Opens B.C.&apos;s Transportation Gateway</title>
            <description>Premier Campbell officially opened the new Park Bridge along the Trans-Canada Highway in Kicking Horse Canyon on August 30. The project has been completed ahead of schedule and is part of the $130-million Phase 2 of the Kicking Horse Canyon Project. The bridge is a 405-metre span featuring five piers reaching up as high as 90 metres. Approaches to the bridge and realignment of more than five km of new four-lane highway east of Golden have also been completed.</description>

            <title>The Spirit of West Vancouver</title>
            <description>The Premier announced on August 2 the Province is providing the District of West Vancouver with $500,000 to help create a Spirit Square in its new Civic Centre atrium. The funding will help create a 325-square-metre atrium connecting the Community and Aquatic centres. Fully retractable walls will seamlessly connect the atrium to surrounding outdoor gathering spaces. The North Plaza, part of the larger Civic Centre project, will include a musical garden with seating, chimes, wind gongs and talk tubes. The area will be further enhanced by public art that will be commissioned in partnership with the Squamish Nation.</description>

            <description>Improvements to the safety and efficiency of the Sea-to-Sky Highway are now more than 50 per cent complete, Premier Campbell announced on July 10.  With completion of a 10-km stretch between Furry Creek and Gonzales Creek, 59 km of the 100-km highway has now been upgraded.  The $600-million project, which will increase public safety with gentler curves and longer sightlines, and improve reliability and shorten travel times with more passing lanes, is on time and on budget.</description>

            <description>Sunshine Coast residents will benefit from the first major expansion of St. Mary&apos;s Hospital in almost two decades, worth an estimated $39.75 million.  Premier Campbell made the announcement on June 28 in Sechelt.  The plans include creating a new special care unit for patients who require close monitoring; adding a new, larger emergency department; expanding the ambulatory care and surgical day care units; and increasing the number of acute care hospital beds to 50 from 38, and creating capacity to expand to 70 beds as demand requires.</description>

The SLRD will construct a youth centre and install new audio visual equipment in Pemberton.             <description>The provincial government has approved capital funding for a new state-of-the-art Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria to benefit Island patients. The new hospital will have capacity for up to 500 beds as the need arises and will replace approximately 400 beds currently in older buildings on the Royal Jubilee Hospital campus. Premier Gordon Campbell made the announcement on May 4. Health Minister George Abbott also announced funding for new facilities in Kelowna and Vernon.</description>

            <description>Premier Gordon Campbell, the Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Lheidli T&apos;enneh Chief Dominic Frederick witnessed the joint initialling of the first Final Agreement reached under the British Columbia Treaty Process on October 29, 2006. The agreement includes self-government provisions and defines Lheidli T&apos;enneh&apos;s rights to resources such as wildlife, fish, timber and sub-surface minerals.</description>

            <title>Raise a Reader Day 2006</title>
            <description>Premier Gordon Campbell participated in Raise-a-Reader Day in British Columbia on September 28, 2006. The Provincial Government is again matching all donations collected from campaigns in Vancouver and Victoria. The event has raised more than $2.45 million in the decade  since the Vancouver Sun started the literacy project to support children and family literacy in British Columbia.</description>
